GoDaddy gets publicity from Founder Killing Elephant

11 Apr

GoDaddy CEO, Bob Parsons, recently posted a video on his blog of his elephant hunting adventure. In this video, you can see them investigating the area of crops that the elephants are supposedly destroying. Then Parsons has a stake out during the night. The elephant returns and Parsons shoots and kills the elephant. The elephant is then shown being swarmed with villagers cutting off meat for food.

This graphic video has had quite a backlashing against GoDaddy. Even a competitor took advantage of their viral misfortune. Namecheap.com offered a $4.99 special deal for all transfers from GoDaddy to their services for all .com, .net an d .org domains. Namecheap.com will also donate 20% of the proceeds from the sales to SaveTheElephants.com. To take advantage of this deal, customers had to enter code: BYEBYEGD. Namecheap.com reportedly raised $20,000 for Save the Elephants.

Many people were outraged after seeing this video. PETA,
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, closed their GoDaddy account and encouraged others to do the same.

It’s still questionable the thinking behind posting this video. Many people are speculating this may be another publicity tactic from the PR- addicted owner.

This quote best sums this up-

“Don’t say anything online that you wouldn’t want plastered on a billboard with your face on it.” Erin Bury, Sprouter community manager*

I Can see it now posted above the highway- Bob Parsons, GoDaddy CEO and Elephant Killer….

Really Bob? What were you thinking?!!!

So what do you think? Do you think this was just a publicity stunt? And could there possibly be anything positive come from this for GoDaddy?!!
